My St. Bernard has been recently diagnosed with bilateral elbow dysplasia. Currently she is being managed with Rimadyl, weight control, and optimizing her glucosamine, chondroitin, and fish oil supplements. Given that she's not quite 3 years old I'm giving serious consideration to arthroscopic surgery on her legs. Since this will not be cheap I want someone with great ortho experience.

Anyone with experiences/recommendations of local dog surgeons. Serveral people I work with have dogs with a variety of dog joint issues and had their surgeries performed by Dr. Engen at Puget Sound Animal Hospital for Surgery. All have positive reviews of him. The general concensus seemed to be that he's pretty conservative in his decisions to perform surgery. My own vet refers his patients to Animal Surgery Clinic in Shoreline. I know of one person who has used their services and he came away with the feeling that they pushed surgeries irrespective of quality of life.

The costs I know are insane. It looks like my plans to look for a place to buy next year will be put on hold but I'm okay with that.

Hi all,

I am a first year doctoral student with a dying Dell. Some of this is due to 3 years of use and abuse (my average computer-life), and some is due to a recent virus. Anyway, it's probably time to invest in a new laptop since I can't get anything done in the lab and I can't spend 30 minutes everyday doing a system restore anymore.

I have a few classmates who are recent Mac converts and love it so far. I saw Papers and thought that'd be great for organizing all my articles. I'm nervous about switching to a Mac, however, because I use SAS for most statistical analysis. Is there anyone out there who has had a good experience using SAS on a Mac? It looks like I'd have to get Windows for it and have Word installed on both the Mac and Windows side if I want to be able to cut/paste from SAS into Word easily. I want to be reasonably sure this is going to work nicely before I shell out the cash.

There is probably some other software packages that are not Mac-compatible, but I figure anything beyond stats, writing, and talk-prepping I can do in the lab.

My alternate plan is to buy another PC but not from Dell. I guess the appeal of the Mac is apparently high user happiness and lower likelihood for viruses.

Any input is welcome (yes, even the comment snarkfests that tend to happen here...)

Thanks.

I'm looking for a good book on graph theory whose definition of a path allows repeated vertices. Anyone have any suggestions?

John opened a checking account in a bank on day d_0 and deposited there x_0 dollars.
Then on d_1 he deposited x_1.
Then on d_2 he deposited x_2.
...

Is there a theory of this kind of stochastic processes?

E.g. if differences d_1 - d_0, d_2 - d_1, ... distributed exponentially (Poisson process) and x_0, x_1, x_2...
lognormally (or Gauss, or Bernoulli, or ...), what would be distribution of $ total on day d ?

The Pew Center on the States released a study on Wednesday that warns of the national consequences looming as ten states, representing a 1/3 of the country's workforce, are in serious financial trouble.

Below are the ten states named and if you click here, you can access the full report.

10 States That Need Your Tourist Ass Now:

1. Arizona
2. California
3. Florida
4. Illinois
5. Michigan
6. Nevada
7. New Jersey
8. Oregon
9. Rhode Island
10. Wisconsin

When Ohio starts looking good, you know we have a big shit ass mess on our hands.  You can read individual reports on the states from the web link above if you feel so inclined.  I took the liberty of including some notes about Michigan that amused me below.
